Geminiani Quartet — Leos Janáček String Quartet

St Michael's, Cornhill

This is the Geminiani Quartet playing one of Leos Janáček’s String Quartets. It was performed on the 28th June as part of the City of London festival in the Church of St Michael’s, Cornhill. The church had perhaps the most beautiful acoustic I think I’ve ever heard.

The recording set up was fairly simple, since everything had to be carried by myself. The microphones I set up were a spaced pair of DPA 4006s and a near coincident pair of AKG C414-BULSs; the 4006s for the lovely natural sparkly sound, and the 414s touched in for imaging. These went in to an RME Micstasy pre-amplifier, and then digitally out of this on ADAT to a JoeCo Black Box Recorder, which is a very very handy piece of kit.

This is the result!
Thanks to Emily Dellit and the rest of the quartet for having me.

Vladimir Waltham — Cello Suite No 5 BWV 1011 — Prelude

In May, I again trekked to St James’s Church in Clerkenwell with lots of gear (this time, luckily in a suitcase…) to record Vladimir play Bach’s 5th Cello Suite, intertwined by a new commission called Microsuite by a chap called Bosch. This was followed by Zoltan Kodaly’s Sonata in B Minor.
The interesting thing about these pieces is that they are all written in ‘Scordatura’, which means the detuning of one of the cello strings. This is why there are two cellos — it is not an easy job to tune one in the middle of the performance.

Special prize for anyone who can name all the fonts…

I thought I’d draw a little diagram of the signal path. You can see it larger by clicking on it.
So the signal went straight from a pair of DPA 4006s to a Canford Dual Preamp, which apparently has some relation to an old custom made Decca mic pre. This was then fed analogue into a TC Electronic Finalizer, which was basically just used for its very nice A/D conversion. All the mastering settings were bypassed.
This was then sent digitally to an Edirol R4 hard disk recorder. The reason to bring the pre and the finalizer was just really a way to circumvent using the Edirol pre amps and DAC, which I imagine is slightly less than amazing quality.

And to top it off, Vladimir is an amazing player, and sounds lovely in a church, which is the most important part.

Michael Trauer and Trio — Bach — Goldberg Variations

St James's Church

Bach — Goldberg Variations — Variation 18 a 1 Clav. Canone alla Sesta

Bach — Goldberg Variations — Aria da capo e fine

On a warm evening in April, after work, I travelled to a small church in Clerkenwell called St James’s. Here, a concert was put on my Michael Trauer and his String Trio. They played Bach’s Goldberg Variations, arranged for string trio. And it sounded really nice.
Lucky for me, as I had dragged about a metric tonnes worth of equipment there.
The only bad bit was when an inconsiderate motorbike-ist decided to see how loud he could rev outside halfway through. But even this didn’t manage to ruin the great atmosphere.

The above are 2 excerpts from the night.

It was recorded on the 20th of April 2011.

Cordelia Williams — Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue in A Minor

This is Cordelia Williams playing some Shostakovich. The set of pieces is one of my favourites ever, and her interpretation is sublime. All one take.

Recorded at Guildhall on the 16th of March 2011.

Bach — Fuga for Solo Violin

Bach completed this work, Sonata No. 1 in G minor, BWV 1001, in 1720.
1720.
That’s coming up to 300 years ago. I find it amazing that Bach wrote music that long ago which is still so relevant and beautiful.

This is Beatrice Cazals playing the movement in a pretend church, because a real one wasn’t available…
It was recorded at Guildhall School of Music & Drama on the 3rd of March, 2011.
